How to Pick the Best Seat on a Plane

Choosing the right seat can make a long flight noticeably more comfortable. It all depends on what you need most, sleep, space, easy access or a good view.

Window seats are great if you want to sleep or enjoy the view. You can lean against the wall and nobody will disturb you when they need to go to the bathroom. The downside is that you have to climb over people if you want to stand up and stretch.

Aisle seats give you freedom to move. You can get up whenever you want without asking anyone. This is especially useful on flights longer than 6 hours when you need to walk around to avoid stiffness. The trade-off is that the trolley will bump you occasionally and people will pass by all the time.

Exit row seats are the holy grail for many travelers because they offer much more legroom. However they come with responsibilities. You have to be able and willing to help in an emergency. Also these seats are often colder and the tray table is different. Not ideal if you want to sleep a lot.

For families or couples, seats in the middle section can be better because you sit together. If you are traveling alone, seats near the front usually mean you exit the plane faster after landing.

Many people recommend avoiding the very last row because the seats dont recline fully and it can be noisy near the toilets. Seats close to the galley can also be busy with crew working.

The best way is to check the seat map as soon as online check-in opens. Some airlines let you choose for free, others charge extra. If you cant choose in advance, arrive early at the airport and ask at the check-in counter.

Picking the right seat according to your needs turns a long flight from something you endure into something much more bearable.
